I wrote a poem about Matt that was published in The Epoch Times (the U.S. edition), in the March 16 - 22, 2022 edition. My poem is based on an article written by Joseph M. Hanneman entitled: "Drawn-Out Legal Battle Drove Jan. 6 Defendant to Suicide, Aunt Says."
ODE TO FALLEN PATRIOT MATTHEW PERNA
A virtuous man
By every known measure,
Matt poured his love
Into every endeavor.
He liked teaching English
To kids in Peru,
And in South Korea,
And in Thailand, too.
When hurricanes swirled
And scarred Haiti's land,
Matt arrived there
And gave folks a hand.
Great outdoor trails
Always brought him much pleasure.
He photographed landscapes,
And his photos we treasure.
With an active, bright mind,
Like a candle that burns,
Matt discerned foul play
In the election returns.
He traveled to D.C.
To protest the wrong,
Touching no one and nothing
All the day long.
He got framed, and he knew it,
But what could he do?
His pursuers played mind games
That tore him in two.
We miss Matt and thank him
For the gifts that he gave.
We will think of him always,
So kind, true and brave.
Sincerely,
Wendy Jacques
